Venice – The Greatest Loss

October 17, 2008

It was another beautiful morning in Venice where the sun laid its rays harshly on us. Today was our second day in Italy, moving from Rome to Venice, there was a contrast in the atmosphere. Rome was more concentrated into the history while in Venice, we concentrated more on the scenery and the romantic atmosphere.

My mother and some friends and I decided to get on the famous boat ride. We carefully stepped onto the wobbly boat, smiled at the camera, and waved goodbye at the people on shore.

“]All Aboard =]

To those who concern, that is NOT my father.

Although i did not have the comfortable seat, the ride was still pleasant. It gently glided on the river, through the tight allies. After observing their housing and buildings, I finally agree to people’s comment about Italy’s designs. They ARE the best!

We slowly floated out into a bigger body of water. It was still early in the morning, so the water was calm and the atmosphere was peaceful. Although most of the buildings look old, they were actually considered to be new with new reinforcement and slight design changes. There was a particular building that looked exceptionally old, so i asked the tour guide about it. Surprisingly, it was Marco Polo’s home. Far from being unoccupied, his house was kept untouched. Notice the cross on top of the entrance of the house, it showed that Marco Polo was religious.

Time passed quickly, we started heading back to the starting point. On our way back our gondolier started singing. I never really noticed him until he started singing. Although he didn’t have the looks, he did have a great voice. As we reached the dock, I noticed another boat setting off. The moment I looked at their gondolier and went into shock!

How come they got a middle-aged, going bold, mean-looking gondolier when they got a young, good-looking, and stylish guy? So much for a romantic city, our gondolier totally ruined the whole mood.

The stereotype for Italians was “Italians are stylish”, everything they do is a work of art. After personally stopping by Italy, i agree with that saying to. no matter what I see, it’s art, art, and art. Instead of using a camera, i should of have used a video  camera.

Venice was very different from Hong Kong. The most obvious reason is the area and size. It’s also because of this spacious feeling, that people in Venice were more, in general, relaxed and slow-paced. I think if i have the opportunity to, i would someday return to Venice. There, i can let go of my stress and relax.
